‘Substantially more’ Wiis promised for holiday, soccer moms thrilled

Having worked retail during the launch of the Wii (and through the holiday), I understand the pain of the consumer. At launch, stores received a mere handful of Wii consoles, and even at this point, they continue to trickle in at a snail’s pace. Somehow, though, Nintendo has managed to outsell their competitors, moving some 403,600 units last month alone. Ouch.

But if you still can’t find a Wii (and are totally over fighting for one at retail), there may be help coming this holiday. Speaking with the San Jose Mercury News, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime promised an “unprecedented Wii supply in North America for the holiday season,” saying that it would be “substantially more than the launch, substantially more than has been seen to date.”

But don’t pack your tents and beach chairs away just yet; Reggie goes on to suggest that the units will still be difficult to find, given the demand for the system … and there appears to be no end in sight.

“In terms of our competitors,” Fils-Aime tells the Mercury News, “what we continue to see is that 360 and PS3 essentially trade share as they alternate on price reductions. But, really, none of that is impacting our business.”
