Subnautica 2’s colossal early access launch means the game is already a success, but the game’s devs are already hard at work on what’s to come next.
After selling a staggering two million copies in 12 hours, Subnautica 2 dev Unknown Worlds is not resting on its laurels by any stretch. Two early access updates are already planned for “the next few months,” the studio said, with some big changes included.
“Our plan for Subnautica 2 is to ensure we’re providing our community with regular updates,” Unknown Worlds said in a new blog post today. “But not all updates will look the same. Updates will vary from focused improvements that address systems and smaller features, to hot fixes when needed, and then our larger expansions.”
Subnautica 2 early access roadmap

The EA 1.1 update for Subnautica 2 will hit first, focusing on many quality-of-life tweaks. With planned improvements to the biomods system, blight encounters, wrecks gameplay, vehicle docking and fabrication, PDA databank, and the voicelogs priority system, it’s clear that the game is still in active development. EA 1.1 also has more passive biomod slots, storage cache, and the ability to sprint planned as additions.
EA 1.2 will have a heavy focus on co-op gameplay, so solo players may not be as interested, but the changes and additions sound great. The 1.2 patch will improve HUD signals, the base builder tool, and the pinned recipes system, while bringing some big multiplayer additions like voice chat, emotes, player trading, and player reviving.
There’s no detailed release date for these updates other than potentially over the summer, but the game is already off to a hot start and patches like these will surely bring players back into the fold as they take breaks throughout development.
Beyond 1.1 and 1.2, Unknown Worlds is planning large-scale expansion updates that will add new biomes, creatures, resources, tools, and a new vehicle, while also adding the next chapter of the game’s story.
It’s going to be a fun few months and years for Subnautica 2 players as the game gets bigger and better with each update.
