According to Variety’s Ben Fritz, Fox won’t be screening Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li for critics before the film’s February 27 release.
The headline is a bit of a joke, of course. Traditionally, when studios refuse to screen films for critics it’s because they’re unsure how critics will react. Or perhaps they’re too sure, knowing that the film is a stinker, or that it falls into a genre of films that are usually panned.
We really have no idea whether or not Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is a good film. If anything, I hope to be entertained, and something tells me that’s the film-maker’s intent. It’s doubtful it’s going to win any Academy Awards, and even if the film strays completely from the admittedly twisted Street Fighter canon, at least it can be an entertaining popcorn flick.
So I’m going to see the film when it comes out, reviews — and expectations of sinking disappointment — aside. Who’s with me?
