Start your dream casting: They’re making a Last of Us movie

How about Ellen Page as Ellie?

Distributor Screen Gems is teaming with Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures production company to produce a live-action Last of Us movie, Deadline reports.

Last of Us co-director and writer Neil Druckmann will pen the script. Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, Druckmann and co-director Bruce Straley, will be the “creative architects” on the project. So this isn’t a studio just taking over the property.

Wells said Naughty Dog talked with multiple companies about making a movie, “but we couldn’t have found better partners who share our creative vision and high standards.” Screen Gems President Clint Culpepper said, “I knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay.”

I guess I can’t begrudge something that should end up like a spiritual kin to Children of Men, even if a lot of The Last of Us‘ strength comes from exploration and minute details. Hopefully the cinematography can replicate that effect.

Also, it would be amusing to see Ellen Page cast as Ellie. How about Anson Mount as Joel? Not that there’s a shortage of potential gruff, bearded men in Hollywood.
