Starstruck: Star Citizen crosses $43 million in crowdfunding

Next stretch goal is a ‘mystery object’

For the ambitious, crowd-funded space sim Star Citizen, it took four months to shoot from $30 million to $40 million. So $2.5 million a month. And in the last month and a half, it’s reached $43 million, showing no signs of slowing down.

Are the same individuals throwing more money at it or does it keep attracting new backers at a remarkably consistent rate? All I know is that I’m in the wrong business. I’ll write you all a sprawling space novel for, like, only one million bucks. I’m not greedy (that wouldn’t even buy me a house in San Francisco).

What’s sort of neat is that the fans voted on the $45 million stretch goal, choosing a “mysterious object” over free weapons or armor or other accoutrements. The Hadesian Artifact is, “a puzzle players will someday compete to solve. Where the artifact lead you? A lost Hadesian outpost, a cache of technology, a hidden jump point? It’s up to you to find out!”

Sounds pretty neat.
