Starfield Script Extender is already out, before the game’s full release

Starfield's modding scene is wasting no time.

Though it’s already available via early access for all Premium Edition ownersStarfield is due to officially launch for wider audiences on September 6. In other words, the main influx of players and modders hasn’t even happened yet. That hasn’t stopped the budding Starfield modding community from sinking its claws into Bethesda’s latest and greatest, however. In fact, whereas it took almost a full year for the revered Fallout 4 Script Extender to release, the Starfield Script Extender is already out.

The obvious expectation up until now was that it would take a while before modders could start taking advantage of Starfield‘s modding capabilities proper. Now, however, with the Starfield Script Extender made available even before the game’s fully launched, this sets the stage for a far more comprehensive and interesting modding scene early on. There is, of course, a small caveat to keep in mind.

The Starfield Script Extender is out now

Script Extender mods are a classic release for any modern Bethesda Game Studios title, and Starfield Script Extender, specifically, is now available for anyone to download. Script Extender allows for additional in-game functionality and scripting capabilities, meaning it’s a must-have for those looking to install more complex mods. In Starfield‘s case, for example, Script Extender users can already download an easy-to-use achievement enabler, a native HDR mod, and a friendly fire feature for the enemies.

That’s all well and good, of course, and it makes for a stellar early modding scene, but there are some things worth keeping in mind about the Script Extender in its current iteration. Notably, it’s still in an early development version, meaning it’s not full-featured and fully reliable just yet. Additionally, it might not amount to all that much on its own until Bethesda releases the Starfield Creation Kit modding tool. After all, the Script Extender itself doesn’t actually do anything, aside from providing a comprehensive modding framework for modders to use in development.

So, it’s a great start and a solid sign of things to come, but eager Starfield fans may need to give the modding scene a few weeks or even months to pan out fully.
