Like it or not, 2010 is now here, as yet another arbitrary, artificial period of twelve months kickstarts to give us the illusion of something important happening. Square Enix is all up for some of that, having sent out a New Year’s message to its adoring public. The theme of the message? It seems to be about kicking Hollywood’s arse.
“In the near future, the rate of convergence between video games and other digital entertainment content will only continue to accelerate,” says sexy Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada. “It is for that reason we will make 2010 a year of taking root, in which we use this environment of change as an opportunity for establishing a strong foothold with which to lead the global entertainment industry.”
When Wada says “take root,” it’s safe to say he means for Square Enix to sink its talons into the worldwide mainstream consumer. The lofty goal appears to be placing the Japanese publisher in the vanguard when videogames make their big cultural and artistic break.
A noble ambition indeed, but I’d have settled for simply, “We promise not to publish anymore tri-Ace games.”
