Square Enix cancels Final Fantasy Agito+ for Vita

With no explanation

Final Fantasy Agito+ is no longer coming to PlayStation Vita, Square Enix just announced.

The publisher has ceased development on the role-playing game, after already postponing its release, which was initially scheduled for this January. Though no explanation was provided for the title’s cancellation, when the game was delayed producer Hajime Tabata said the problem was not on Square Enix’s end.

Tabata asserted there was an issue with the PlayStation Vita’s development environment and there was nothing the development team could do without an update and of some kind and support from Sony. Perhaps the obstacle was never remedied, thereby forcing Square Enix to can the project.

Alternatively, this might have something do with the mobile version, which launched on in May 2014. Last month, the publisher announced it would end service for the game in November, with plans to develop and release a “reborn” version sometime in the future.

While Tabata said Agito would “definitely be localized” for western audiences at some point, that may no longer be in the cards. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Final Fantasy Agito served as both a prequel and portable companion app to Final Fantasy Type-0, a high-definition remaster of which launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One earlier this year.
