Everyone has that dream pairing of two of their favorite games. Most of the time they are a pipe dream but every now and then some mad lads come along and actually smash together two games that shouldn’t go together and make it work, Psyonix did it by combining racing and soccer games with Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars and later Rocket League. Now 1047 Games want to combine Portal and Halo to make a free-to-play arena shooter and where do I sign up?

Taking its roots from two computer science majors putting portals into video games for a project demo, Splitgate: Arena Warfare isn’t shy about wearing its influence on its shoulder. Inspired by the heyday of PC arena shooters, Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian formed 1047 Games and went about combining two of the biggest and best games of all-time into an online shooter.

Splitgate: Arena Warfare will launch on May 22 for Steam and despite the free to play model, the developers are preemptively assuaging fears of the usual free-to-play pitfalls by ensuring that any microtransactions in game will be limited to cosmetic items only. Speaking on why they wanted to use the free-to-play model, Proulx said: “As Splitgate evolved, we realized that players would be best served with a free-to-play model. We want to ensure that everyone who wants to play has the opportunity to do so.”

Just from the concept alone, I’m having flashbacks to a version of Halo: Combat Evolved I used to play with my friends. No shields, 50% health, shotguns only, Chiron TL-34. Every step could be your last and it was so fast-paced that it took on a feeling of horror. It was also some of the most fun we’ve had with the series and if this game can capture even a fraction of the fast-paced, on your toes action then they are well on their way to a great game.

Splitgate: Arena Warfare will launch for Steam on May 22.
