After almost nine months Europe’s PSN is finally going to see the release of Spelunker HD tomorrow as part of the weekly store update. Spelunker HD is a remake of the NES platformer which updates the 8-bit graphics and adds incredibly complex new challenges whilst retaining all the classic mechanics and the utterly brutal difficulty level. It also boasts a generous six player co-op mode for online play, as well as four player local co-op.
You would do well to read Dale North’s impressions from the game’s US release, which does a great job of explaining its quirky appeal. Essentially the goal is to jump and climb through a labyrinthine cave collecting as much treasure as you can along the way without dying. On the default settings pressing left/right on a rope without jumping at the same time will kill you instantly, which hopefully explains just how hard staying alive is going to be.
If that doesn’t put you off though, the game will be releasing tomorrow at €9.99 with a 20% discount for PlayStation Plus subscribers.
