Sony: We didn’t know your personal info was at risk

After Sony admitted that our personal details may be at risk due to nefarious hackers, one of the biggest issues customers had was the time it took for Sony to tell us. Even a senator got pissed off. Sony, however, has stressed that it knew of the potential threat only moments after telling us.

“There’s a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers’ data being compromised,” said SCEA communications bod Patrick Seybold. “We learned there was an intrusion April 19th and subsequently shut the services down. We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

“It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly this afternoon.”

Sony has released an FAQ, detailing any questions PSN users may have. It doesn’t answer a few important ones, like — “Why did security suck?”, “Why release a dozen Firmware updates if they didn’t do anything?” or “Why did you make it so some games can’t be played offline for something as stupid as Trophy syncing?” Maybe there’s a second FAQ coming for that.

Seriously though, while this clears up the issue of Sony sitting on information, there’s still a whole bunch of unanswered questions, and a lot of people want answers. There’ll be no hiding under a coat and waiting for this to blow over.
