PlayStation Home has not exactly been the most warmly received of ventures, and part of that is most certainly down to the two-year build of hype. Microsoft got away with fairly useless Avatars because they weren’t built up for years beforehand. Home, however, has not been so lucky.

“Initially, there was real excitement from people, because we were showing something really different and that had a lot of potential,” suggested Home director Peter Edward. “And then there’s the realization that, well, we probably announced it too early – GDC 07 was a long time ago. I think there was sort of recognition amongst developers of ‘Oh, this is interesting, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.'”

Goodwin also said that the aforementioned developers were “cagey” about being involved with Home, unsure if they wanted to take part. However, he stated that studios should be excited for Home as it allows them to keep a direct relationship with consumers, and maintain interest in its games with tournaments and leaderboards, not to mention direct feedback. So basically, they’re touting Home as a slightly more colorful Internet message board.

Maybe with a few more months/years, Home will be something worth getting excited about. Right now, I simply don’t want it on my Hard Drive again.
