Folders for days!
Sony’s giving the PlayStation 4’s system software a decent overhaul sometime in the coming weeks. Update 4.00 is rolling out soon, and Sony’s John Koller just took to PlayStation Blog to detail all the changes we can expect.
The addition that will probably be most welcomed is the inclusion of a new folders system. As Koller puts it “One of the big requests we get is for more options to organize content on PS4. With this update, we’re adding functionality to create folders on PS4’s content launcher and Library. This will help collect your favorite games and select apps in one place for quick and easy access.” Along with folders, there will be new sorting tools for the Library, allowing for swifter navigation to specific content.
Another of the big talking points is a UI refresh. According to Koller “We’ve made a lot of adjustments and improvements to PS4’s main user interface. That includes some changes you may notice right away, like new system backgrounds and a revised What’s New tab, to smaller changes like updated popup notifications and redesigned system icons. As a whole, it all adds up to a more refined and easy to use UI. The overall look and feel of the UI remains the same — it just has a fresh coat of paint.”
Some more of the new features with Update 4.00 are: A quick menu that covers only part of the screen and doesn’t necessitate leaving gameplay (possibly similar to Xbox One’s “Snap”); an improved Share menu to streamline the social media process; the ability to view Trophy collection while offline; and changes to the user profile, including the ability to add screenshots as background images.
Update 4.00 isn’t quite upon us yet. Koller notes that it’s entering public beta soon. Sign up here if you’re interested in participating in that. Everyone else will have to wait a few weeks before getting their hands on all the PS4’s upcoming changes.
