Sony doesn’t buy exclusivity, somehow thinks its system works

Jack Tretton, the cheeky scamp at the head of SCEA, has criticized rivals Microsoft and Nintendo, saying the former is too dependant on third party titles while the latter relies too heavily on first party games. Somehow this makes Sony, in its current state of bleeding exclusives like a hemophiliac and lacking a wide choice of first party games, the far superior option. Maybe in a magical dream world where Tretton gets Jessica Alba thrice nightly and eats candy that’s not only healthy for you, but adds an inch to your penis with each bite. In the real world however, it’s hard to see exactly how Sony’s current strategy is better than those of Microsoft and Nintendo.

“We have a very different approach to exclusives than some of our competitors,” Tretton told PSM magazine. “We don’t buy exclusivity. We don’t fund development. We don’t, for lack of a better term, bribe somebody to only do a game on our platform.” Yeah, that’s working out real good for you guys, isn’t it? This wouldn’t be half as ludicrous a statement if Sony could catch a break lately, but as it stands, claiming that the company doesn’t bribe third parties to develop for the PS3 exclusively doesn’t really look like a positive when the system’s third party games are available on a much cheaper machine. Right now, tossing money at developers is working for a certain company and Sony might want to copy that approach, along with copying achievement points. Not to unduly bash Sony (Heaven forbid we open that can of worms), but pretending to be high and mighty doesn’t work when you’re neither high, nor mighty right now.
