Fortnite’s ever-apparent attempt at becoming the “metaverse” we heard so much about a few years ago gets closer with each passing season.
The battle royale game’s newest season, Override, begins next week, and both leaks and teasers have it sounding like a who’s who when it comes to gaming collaborations…including none other than the Blue Blur himself, Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic’s official account posted a teaser today, showing Fortnite’s Peely speeding along what looks like an approximation of Green Hill Zone, teasing that “this new ‘Fortnite‘ Zone’ feels oddly familiar.”
The hedgehog’s inclusion in the season is a confirmation of one of several leaks about this season specifically that have been pouring out this year. Other potential new collabs in Override (according to data miners and leakers) include games and franchises like Kingdom Hearts, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Persona 5, Vampire Survivors, and more.
I genuinely have no clue how Fortnite continues to grab these collabs ($$$), let alone how it tells a coherent story that somehow throws them all in the game together, but this feels like the closest we’ll ever get to Ready Player One.
Each season when there are new additions to the game, I always laugh at the variety of kinds of characters in each player’s team. Any round of Fortnite can include anything from a gaming icon like Sonic, to a Marvel or DC superhero, a current popular musician, a meme character, and basically just about anything in between.
I definitely don’t play the game like I used to, but it’s always interesting to see what Epic Games has cooked up for each passing season, especially when it comes to season-ending events that lead into the next set of ridiculousness. I’m curious to see what previous gaming collabs may return this season if they’re truly leaning into that theme (Resident Evil skins, I’m looking at you).
Fortnite’s Chapter 7, Season 4: Override begins on Aug. 20.
