The live-action movie design for Sonic the Hedgehog has finally stepped out of the shadows. Ahead of an official reveal, a merchandise style guide inadvertently leaked the Blue Blur’s new face.

Stare into the piercing eyes of this “chill,” “sarcastic,” “mischievous” little whippersnapper.

A marketing firm leaked the Sonic live-action movie design

The page on the design agency’s site has since been pulled, but here’s an excerpt from the listing:

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in the world who isn’t familiar with SEGA’s beloved IP, Sonic the Hedgehog. But global reverence does come with a unique price. In creating a licensing and packaging program to be used worldwide and to be applied against targeting multiple audience demographics, it was necessary to strike a balance between staying true to the Sonic brand, while appealing to a global audience, and differentiating from previous Sonic merchandise packaging.

Our approach was to create a system that was versatile and modular, so that various Sonic IPs including Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic, Film Sonic, Animation Sonic, and other events could be integrated seamlessly within the baseline packaging look.

The outlet also came across a leaked image of Sonic running.

Fans have been stewing over Sonic’s movie design ever since the teasers highlighted his muscular legs. We knew his outline, but not the details. Now those details are in greater focus. We still don’t know exactly how he’ll appear in live action when he’s at odds with Jim Carrey in full Dr. Robotnik garb, but I think we’ve got the gist by now. There will be no escape once the marketing push begins.

Even Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka chimed in about the live-action design:

Morbidly curious to see more? Our next glimpse might come at SXSW on March 16. Sega is planning a panel about Sonic’s “next steps for 2019 and beyond” with “a special announcement or two.”

The far-reaching world of online fan art has made me numb to all things Sonic, and I feel nothing.
