Not content to release a $700 slab of pointlessness, it appears Apple will be following a business model familiar to iPod Touch users and cheekily charge users for future firmware upgrades. The implication comes from Apple’s EULA, which was publicly released recently.
The basic gist of Apple’s fanciful text seems to indicate that minor OS upgrades will be free, along with one major upgrade in the future. After that, you’re on your own. The EULA, like many EULAs, is open to interpretation and as such, people may have it wrong. Take a look for yourself and see what you think.
“Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time,” writes Apple, “up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free.”
Apple has justified its iPod Touch OS charges by claiming they’re a result of “legal accounting requirements.” No, nobody has yet worked out what that means, but everybody has picked up the heady whiff of bullshit when they try to understand it.
