Slow your DICE roll: Battlefield not being annualized

After EA decided to pull Medal of Honor from its stables, there was fear that Battlefied would be annualized to continue to try and contend with the Call of Duty juggernaut. Speaking to Videogamer, Battlefield 4 executive producer Patrick Bach said, “I think the core Battlefield idea that we’re working on at DICE is… We can’t build a game at DICE every year.”

Good. Because, guess what? I really need Mirror’s Edge 2‘s development to not have excess Battlefield giblets clog the cogs, you know? Yes, I’m still hoping to not be disappointed by that one.

Bach did note, however, that demand for Battlefield is higher than ever, and he hopes that things like Battlefield Premium serve as a model for a way to keep providing content without having to release a full new game each year. He even mused on Battlefield as a singular platform with content release, like an MMO, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for that one coming from EA, a company that annualized sports game releases that are sometimes literal reskinned roster updates. Maybe they’ll just put another studio on it.
