Skybound turns to crowdfunding for a new Invincible video game

Have $100 to spare?

Skybound Entertainment has announced it has another Invincible video game in the works, and while there’s next to no info on it, the company wants fans to help crowdfund its development.

The success of the Invincible animated series has naturally spawned a couple of video games already, such as the Atom Eve visual novel RPG, as well as a handful of custom maps in Fortnite, including the recently released Rise of the Sequids. As for what Skybound has planned for its next attempt, all it’s said is the game will be the company’s first AAA Invincible game and will feature “tons of action, stunning game and character design, and of course, a healthy dose of blood.”

Despite giving fans nothing to really go on, Skybound has asked for investments as ‘little’ as $100 from the general public, both to help finance the game’s development and so fans can own a piece of the Invincible IP for themselves. However, this isn’t the same as buying shares in the company and is more akin to a Kickstarter campaign, since you’re not going to earn any dividends.

Skybound’s subscription agreement even says investment “involves a high degree of risk” and is really only for “persons that can bear the economic risk for an indefinite period of time and that can afford to lose their entire investment.” Plus, your investment would become illiquid, meaning it can’t be converted back into cash nor can it be sold to someone else if you ever change your mind.

Regardless, Skybound’s campaign has already proved successful. At the time of writing, it’s made $446,200, blowing past the $50,000 minimum threshold with still 14 days to go until the campaign closes on April 29. Investors are also promised unique perks as part of a loyalty program but, unlike a Kickstarter campaign, the website doesn’t state what any of these perks are.

“We are thrilled to launch this Regulation Crowdfunding campaign on Republic, inviting fans to join us on this new expansion and venture,” said Skybound CEO David Alpert in a press release. “At Skybound, we prioritise fostering meaningful connections with our audience, and this initiative allows fans to not only immerse themselves in the world of Invincible but also to directly contribute to its expansion.”

The prospect of a big budget Invincible game is certainly an intriguing one. I’m sure some fans have dreamed of an open world adventure where you play as the titular hero, fighting villains in bloody combat, since the original comics came out. Cameos in Fortnite and Mortal Kombat 1 can only do so much after all. It’s just hard to get properly excited until Skybound has something tangible to show/tell us.
