Skate 2 kickflips its way to retail on January 23

Wow, OK. So Skate 2, the sequel to Electronic Arts’ genre-reinventing skateboarding title is coming out soon. Like, January 23 soon.

If you can’t wait, starting next month, you’ll be able to use a web-based Graphics Creator tool at www.skate.ea.com, if you want to get a jump on creating in-game content. Additionally, if you pre-order the game at select retailers (read: GameStop, at the very least), you’ll get a code to unlock the “Throwback Pack,” which gives access to retro clothing, accessories, and gestures.

Is it me, or did this one just kind of come out of nowhere? I knew it was coming out, but haven’t heard much about it save for a few screenshots here and a trailer there. Does EA think that because they don’t have a Tony Hawk title to compete with they can just quietly slip it onto the shelves and still have it be successful?

In any case, the first game was pretty incredible considering it was a first jab at a skating title, and I have high hopes for the sequel. From the looks of things, it seems like they’re simply building on the solid foundation they built last year, which bodes well.

Seriously, does anyone stay up late at night missing Activision’s Tony Hawk games?
