Do you need to complete God of War: Ragnarok before playing Valhalla?

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla is a separate mode from the main game, which means you can play it at any time. However, the Valhalla mode takes place after the Ragnarok story. Santa Monica Studio, the developers of the game, describe Valhalla as being an epilogue to the main story. Therefore, it’s recommended that you finish the God of War Ragnarok campaign before playing Valhalla.

If you aren’t concerned with story spoilers for the main game, then you can hop into the new mode at anytime. None of your equipment or upgrades carry over to the new mode, so you don’t need to worry about that. Valhalla is a roguelike expansion to God of War Ragnarok with five difficulty modes and what looks to be an awful lot of replayability. There are also rewards to be earned from Valhalla that increase with the difficulty.

If you like the gameplay in God of War Ragnarok and wish you could play more of it without worrying as much about the story, then Valhalla might be for you.

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla can be added to your library via the PlayStation Store right here.
