Should Heathcliff replace Link in Legend of Zelda?

Television’s second favorite orange cat deserves a shot

The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo’s strongest franchises, a series that has remained successful and engaging while doing very little to change itself. However, the games have, over the years, become somewhat predictable in terms of format. The age-old story of Link facing off against Ganondorf is iconic, but is it time for a change?

One popular idea is having Heathcliff, the comic strip cat created by George Gatefly in 1973, replace Link as the series’ protagonist. Not only would this give the Zelda franchise an all-new perspective, it would also introduce a new generation to Heathcliff, who needs the exposure since he’s not as good as Garfield and has done nothing of note in years.

With a Heathcliff movie planned for 2013 or 2014, now is the time for Nintendo to get on the train before it leaves the station and repackage Zelda as a Heathcliff tie-in game. Here’s hoping Nintendo’s thinking the same thing.

What do you think, though? Should Link stay the same, or is it time to Heathcliff to take center stage? Is there another cartoon cat that would do the job better, like Eek, Custard, or one of those racist ones from Lady and the Tramp?
