Self-destructing laptop is the newest in data protection

Recommended Videos

I know what you’re thinking — a laptop that blows up? Technically that would be a true hazard, so of course it doen’t physically go boom — although it does destroy data if it believes the laptop is under threat.

British company Virtuity have developed the Backstopp using intelligent security technology. The computer actually detects when a laptop has been moved from an assigned area. If it is moved outside of this zone (which can be specified by the owner,) the software can activate a self-destruct message and wham — all precious info goes poof. Maybe not essential for your World of Warcraft needs (although who knows what you people do in there,) but darn handy if you’re planning a bank robbery or world takeover.

There’s no mention of the price on the website, so I assume it’s wallet-rape, but that may not matter to the type of organizations who could really use this kind of technology. Most of all, I’m happy to see it as a reality. I hope progression such as this means I can hope to see spam permanently obliterated in this lifetime (although that may be too much for hope for.)
