Sega reveals Persona sales beat Shin Megami Tensei, and other interesting figures

2017 Annual Report tells all

Although Shin Megami Tensei started it all and has roughly 28 total packaged editions to sell, Persona 5‘s 13 editions have outsold it over the years. Sega has revealed that since 1987 the MegaTen series has sold 7.2 million units, and Persona has peddled 8.5 since 1996. Persona 5 was a huge reason why it was able to take the crown, as it shifted 1.8 million on its own.

Other interesting numbers include Sonic’s total sales since 1991 (360 million units/downloads), Yakuza‘s sales (10.5 million units/downloads across 75 editions), and Phantasy Star (4.5 million Phantasy Star Online 2 IDs). You can view the entire breakdown below.

With Atlus, Sega seems to be doing well for itself. Even if something isn’t localized or is received well critically, they still have an embedded audience. While some developers might cancel a series like Etrian Odyssey for example, it’s still trucking at Sega.
