Sega is “investigating” the possibility of Shenmue remasters, according to a company spokesperson.

In response to a fan inquiry on the subject, Sega Europe community manager Dan Sheridan claimed it’s something the company would “love” to do, while maintaining it’s not a simple process.

While Sega is “investigating how to make it a reality,” there are certain barriers in the way, such as licensing issues and quality concerns surrounding porting the games to modern platforms.

A crowdfunded sequel, Shenmue 3is currently in development at series creator Yu Suzuki’s studio Ys Net, and is planned for a December 2017 release across PlayStation 4 and PC.
