Lot’s of gaming movie news coming out thanks to panels at SDCC this year. Is it important? Of course! The proper choosing of actors for Gears of War for instance could make or break the film. A current fan favorite to be in the film is Dwayne Johnson, who was also chosen by the film’s screenwriter. However, neither the fans nor the screenwriter really have much say over casting and so it appears that Johnson will not be in the Gears film at all as director Len Wiseman doesn’t want to have any ties to the Doom movie.
Speaking at the San Diego Comic-Con he ran through the reasons they would not be casting Johnson, and probably made the action star feel pretty bad while doing it. “A Doom connection would not be smart for us,” Wiseman validly said. He then went on to add a little backhanded insult by saying the he would not choose an actor by throwing “a bunch of strongmen into the ring and see who comes out victorious… I’m looking for an actor for the role and then [I’ll] put him into shape. I’m always thinking who could play the best Marcus. You want to get hooked into the character [first] and then all the amazing spectacle.”
Dude, your last movie was Live Free or Die Hard, which was an awesome action film, but hardly puts you on a pulpit to reject The Rock as an actor. In my opinion Johnson is by far one of the best action stars out there, and since so far Marcus’ range of emotion has been from gruff to gruffer I’m not seeing where the issue would be. Of course I secretly heart the Doom movie as a guilty pleasure so I’m probably a bit biased.
