Scott Pilgrim was made in a mere five months

But DLC takes over two years? Go figure

The unfolding saga of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World‘s second set of DLC is pure comedy. Over two years since the original DLC and still Ubisoft can’t ship it out on time. Maybe if you hadn’t stolen pixel art from Sonic Battle on the GBA, all this could have been avoided!

In contrast, the development of the core game was quite fast. Siliconera was able to get in touch with Richard Tsao, managing director at Ubisoft Chengdu, the Chinese studio that did the bulk of the work on Scott Pilgrim. According the Tsao, Ubisoft Montreal was supposed to be the sole developer on the game, but a shifting of resources towards other projects meant that Montreal would be unable to get the game out in time for movie’s release in six months.

Though no other studio had the balls to take on such an impossible task, the rookie Chengdu decided it was time to prove its worth. Montreal had already taken care of pre-production — including one level and one playable character — but that still left an additional six levels and three characters, plus a month for certification. As Tsao explained, “I had four expats came, leading a group of about forty Chinese staff who made this game, literally 80% of the game, in five months. Because we didn’t argue about what color blue it was. You know what it was. We just did it.”

Wow. That’s f*ckin’ efficiency.
