Rumor: Ubisoft interested in acquiring THQ’s assets

Reportedly looking for a ‘bargain’ on IP

Word from the gals in the typing pool suggests that mighty European publisher Ubisoft is interested in snatching the recently bankrupt THQ’s assets. According to the gossip, Ubisoft’s waiting to snatch the property at a “bargain” price.

Sources close to MCV claim Ubisoft’s embroiled in “lengthy discussions” to reach an agreement, with the publisher anchoring down and waiting for the best deal possible. If successful, Ubisoft could get to control such IP as Darksiders, Saints Row, Company of Heroes, Red Faction, and … haha … Homefront

My first reaction to this news involved my blood running ice cold within my veins, but the more I think about it, the more I believe I’m okay with this.

For all its rubbishness, Ubisoft does generally do right by its best IP, and while it screws over the PC market regularly, it’s not like THQ was all that good about getting the PC versions of its games working either. If Ubisoft were to acquire all this property, I have a feeling we’d not lose too much as customers. What do you reckon, though? Would Ubisoft be a good buyer?
