According to Kotaku’s source, the long-rumored Gears of War Kinect title is more than just Internet fabrication.
“Sources claiming to be familiar with the project” are saying that an early demo of the game used game assets and events from Gears of War 2. Oh, and surprise — it was set on-rails.
Epic Games was set to reveal a surprising Gears of War-related something-or-other at the Spike VGAs last December. The reveal was eventually canceled, but rumors pointed to it being a new, Kinect-related Gears of War title. More recently, Epic Games trademarked Gears of War: Exile, which could be related to the motion controlled project.
Is this the “hardcore” turn that Kinect needs, an on-rails shooter? As impressive as the technology is, there are limitations to what Kinect can do; I’d expect a lot of on-rails experiences until Microsoft caves and announces a single-handed controller device. Still, if anyone can make the tech appealing to the hardcore crowd, I’d say Epic Games is a sure bet.
