Risen 3’s teaser trailer looks vaguely like Dante’s Inferno

Teaser? I hardly…consider this a good teaser

The official teaser trailer for Risen 3: Titan Lords is out now, and it involves a lot of pretty CG animation and generic combat. It’s got all the hallmarks of a traditional Western RPG: darkness, big swords, and copious amounts of chainmail. It’s a regular Berserk! I kid. It actually reminds me of Dante’s Inferno somehow, at least in aesthetics alone. Curious.

Normally, that would get me all hot and bothered since I love fantasy settings and whatnot, but unlike Risen 2: Dark Waters and its droves of piratey goodness, this trailer doesn’t immediately grab my attention. I mean, if you told me you could draw runes and stuff a la Arx Fatalis, I’d probably be more interested, but right now? Nah.

I can only assume the subtitle Titan Lords refers to the Titan Wars, the Big Bad for all intents and purposes of this installment of Risen. The world has been forsaken by all the gods after the Titan Wars tore it asunder. A young warrior faces a new threat from the shadows (I see you hiding over there, The Rasmus) and his soul is pilfered in the process. With the help of the banned Mages and their protective Guardians, he can embark on a journey to get his soul back, or he can side with one of the other guilds to accomplish the same goal, hints the flavor text on the official website. So it’s kind of like What Dreams May Come, except it’s “your” soul you have to reclaim, and Cuba Gooding, Jr. probably won’t be around to crack jokes.

I need to see more before passing my official judgment, so wow me, Risen 3!
