Capcom seems to be doing pretty well for themselves during the economic downturn. According to their CFO, Kazuhiko Abe, the publisher has posted an eleven percent operating profit for the 2008 fiscal year. Resident Evil 5 likely played a significant role in achieving those numbers.
While speaking at the Reuters Technology Summit in Tokyo, Abe revealed that the action/horror title attained sales of 4.4 million units in March with another 570,000 sales for April. Sales numbers for May have yet to be counted but they’re so close to hitting the five million mark that they might as well have called it by now.
I’ve always been aware that the lion’s share of sales occur within the first few weeks of a game’s release, but these numbers really throw that idea into sharp focus. With a drop of over 87% sales, I suppose there’s something to be said for early adoptors in the software sector of the games industry.
