Before that E3 Nintendo backlash for abandoning the “core” gamer really started rolling, MTVMultiplayer had a sit-down with NOA President Reggie Fils-Aime to talk about Grand Theft Auto on the DS platform. Towards the end of the interview, Reggie comments on the possibility of having a GTA on the Wii, and even seems open to the prospect. His candor is a bit surprising to behold.
You know, a GTA on the Wii is all based on what Rockstsar and Take Two want to do. And again, from our standpoint, if they build a bottoms-up game that takes advantage of what we do well, I’d love to see it on the platform.
The natural follow-up to the above statement was a question regarding if any conversations with Rockstar or Take Two about a Wii-specific GTA had taken place. Reggie firmly declined that he ever talked about the prospect to either the publisher or developer of the franchise. Even if Reggie declined talking to his friends at Rockstar about a Wii GTA, he sounded pretty open to the idea on the platform. Perhaps Nintendo has yet to abandon hardcore players. Next year’s Nintendo press conference at E3 may be all about GTA or Link as a sociopath.
