Whether you’ve already played Journey or have yet to do so, you’ve no doubt fallen in love with Austin Wintory’s beautifully introspective soundtrack. Jayson Napolitano has already given the full album his highest recommendation, so any fiver you have sitting in your sock drawer ought to be going towards a purchase. In the meantime, let me direct you to this four-track, instrumental tribute album produced by Random of Black Materia and Mega Ran fame.
Journey: A Hip Hop Excursion samples tunes from the soundtrack and reinterprets them while retaining the originals’ melodious atmosphere. Now, I’ve posted enough instrumental remixes on Dtoid to understand that some of you may not always appreciate the treatment of the source material. I will even admit that Random’s “Born for This” and “Road of Trials” mixes are a little heavy on the repetitive drum beats. However, “Apotheosis” and especially “Threshold” are reworked extremely well. In fact, you may not even recognize the source tracks right away!
Journey: A Hip Hop Excursion is a very modest project that honors the spirit of Wintory’s soundtrack while possessing a sound of its own. You may like it, you may not. Either way, it’s a pay-whatever affair, so it wouldn’t hurt to give it a download.
