The PlayStation 5 Pro has had upscaling technology for a while now, allowing users to experience games in high resolution without sacrificing much of visual quality. However, players on the bae PS5 have been largely left out, but Sony is now offering something to them, too.
What is QSSR?
QSSR, standing for Quick Spectral Super Resolution, is Sony’s alternative to its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). It’s an offshoot of its PS5 Pro-based technology developed in direct partnership with AMD, which will use streamlined and hand-crafted architecture to make it compatible with the base PS5 console and its hardware.
It offers the same type of service as PSSR, albeit not on the same level, and its best PC comparison would be the DLSS and FSR technologies. In essence, these software solutions use AI-based neural networks to take a lower-resolution screen and upscale it to the target resolution, adding performance while maintaining the visual fidelity of the target. On the base PS5, this will open up some games to have Ray Tracing modes enabled while achieving a much greater FPS, bridging the gap between the base and the Pro consoles.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei will be the first two games to have this feature implemented, but with time, I expect most of the AAA library on the PS5 to have it around. Most of them already have PSSR, DLSS, FSR, or Intel’s XeSS on PC and PS5 Pro, so implementing this one shouldn’t take too long.
At any rate, this finally gives base PS5 players something to use to improve their performance without having to, well, purchase a new and more powerful console.
