The PlayStation Portable, content with having conquered the adult market and humiliating the DSi, is now targeting the “tween” demographic with an upcoming promotion. Like a less flamboyant Gary Glitter, SCEE will be homing in on kids between the ages of eight and fifteen, launching the “Your Whole World Is In Your Hands” campaign. Unlike Gary Glitter, however, it will just be their world in their hands.

The pspsinyourhands Web site has launched as a beta test, and in typical Sony fashion, it focuses on everything but the videogames, continuing the PSP’s commitment to trying to be everything at once, and failing to excel in any one category. So far, the new site allows you to build your own “world,” but we have no idea why we should do that. We might be a bit too old for this chicanery.

“PSP is going for a younger market, which isn’t something we’ve really done before,” says UK product manager Claire Backhouse. “Our heartland is 16-24-year-old men and always will be — they won’t be neglected in the slightest. But the summer’s game releases, such as Harry Potter and Petz, as well as the launch of the new colours, are certainly appealing to an 8-15-year-old audience.”

I’m sure it’ll work.

It won’t work.
