PlayStation just gave Nintendo Switch 2 its biggest boost this week

Nintendo getting a rare W.

The price of a PlayStation 5 is rising in Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, and the announcement couldn’t be more welcome news for the Nintendo Switch 2.

From April 14, the PS5 will be raising the price of either the Digital Edition of the console or both the Standard and Digital Edition in these four territories, with the price rises as follows:

RegionNew Price
EuropePS5 Digital Edition – €499.99
(No pricing changes for the standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive)
UKPS5 Digital Edition – £429.99
(No pricing changes for the standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive)
AustraliaStandard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $829.95
PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $749.95
New Zealand Standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – NZD $949.95
PS5 Digital Edition – NZD $859.95

Additionally, the Disk Drive for the PS5 will also be getting a price change on the same date, with the prices as follows:

RegionNew Price
Europe€79.99
UK£69.99
AustraliaAUD $124.95
New Zealand NZD $139.95

The price rises, at least in the UK, means the Switch 2 will launch as the cheapest available console on the market (£399.99) and the new price of the PS5 Digital Edition costs the same as the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle, giving Nintendo a big potential advertising boost ahead of its release on June 5.

Similarly in Europe, the price of a base Switch 2 is now cheaper (469.99 Euro) over the Digital Edition of the PS5, even if the Digital Edition is slightly cheaper than getting the Switch 2 and its Mario Kart World tie-in (509.99 Euro) but still, it represents a significant steal for a console without a disk drive.

When you consider the Switch 2 also benefits from having access to the entire Switch Library, and the PS5 Digital is limited to only digital games you purchased, it could potentially make the Switch 2 a more worthwhile and attractive investment ahead of its competition, especially when the Switch 2 is going to get big titles like Borderlands 4 and more at the same time as current-gen consoles.

It’s definitely some good news that Nintendo needed right now with the misinformation bubble swirling around. Now, we just need to hope that the US tariffs don’t impact the price of the Switch 2 worldwide moving forward.
