PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2 overrun by hackers

The PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2 is reported to be completely overrun by hackers, cheaters, glitchers and bastards. This time, it’s all been traced back to the infamous PS3 “homebrew” hack that has split the console wide open.

“Sony has recently acknowledged a breach in security on the PS3 which resulted in games [becoming] exposed to exploits and hacks,” writes Infinity Ward community bod Robert Bowling. “Modern Warfare 2 is no exception to this security exploit and we understand that some of you have experienced problems with stats and other issues associated with this.

“Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they’re played on, therefore; updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform. Regretfully, Call of Duty games are receiving the bulk of the hacker’s attention, due to its high player counts and popularity. However, the number of legitimate players severely outweighs the bad apples.”

IW’s stance seems to basically be that this is on Sony’s head and not the studio’s. Until Sony fixes the breaches, less honorable MW2 players can install aimbots to ensure all their bullets hit, shoot through any wall they like, unlock all content, and alter Clan tags. Basically, it’s the Wild West out there.

While this is being blamed on the recent PS3 security breach, it has to be said that this happened with Call of Duty 4 as well. Seems to me like the PS3 is just a very hack-friendly console, not helped by the fact that Sony doesn’t like banning anybody for f*cking around. Maybe Sony should actually step in and do something this time?
