PS3 catching up to Xbox 360’s lifetime sales

If you’re keeping score, here’s the latest stats: Sony has now sold 56 million units worldwide. That’s a lot, but it’s not quite at Microsoft’s 57.3 million. Close, though! If you consider that the PS3 launched a year after the Xbox 360, and even later in Europe, it’s pretty close to even in my mind.

The PS3 is still going strong, though I don’t know if they’ll ever overcome the Xbox 360 for lifetime worldwide sales. The latest quarterly data says that 3.7 million PS3s were sold, up from 3.5 million last year. Price drops and killer exclusives, like the glorious Uncharted 3, surely helped in that.

You’ve come a long way, Sony!
