Sony plays tortoise once again
Ah, the ten-year cycle. Sony’s favorite go-to phrase to defend any failing, misstep, or lack of support with the PS3 has been given a fresh injection of life by executive John Koller, who used the phrase when talking about the PS Vita. Yep, that has a ten-year cycle too.
“We’re in year one, so we’ll be supporting it for some time,” he told IGN. “But yeah, it does have its own 10-year life cycle. All of our platforms do … it’s a marathon, not a sprint. We expect long-term success from all our platforms.”
Handheld technology is moving so fast these days that I wonder if Sony can stick to its famous 10-year plan this time. However, whether it does or doesn’t isn’t the issue — it’s the fact that Sony pulls this rabbit-and-tortoise schtick as its get-out-of-jail-free card for any of its problems. Sure, the Vita may be around for ten years, but we’ll be lucky to get enough games to cover half that time if Sony’s recent “build a system and then wander off” approach holds true.
Oh wait … the firmware will cover us for the other five years. Silly me.
