Pokemon Black/White 2 debut trailer melds old with new

[Update: Added a video of Serperior getting swooned by both fire and ice forms of Kyurem. It’s Super Effective.]

The Pokemon series has a long history of repackaging old content in profitable ways. At its core, Pokemon Yellow was an “old” game, but it came with enough new features that a lot of fans considered it an essential purchase.

While that title was more of a director’s cut of Pokemon Red/Blue, the latest “new” Pokemon game is claiming to be a full-on sequel. From the looks of it, the game will make good on that claim in a lot for key areas. It has two new leads, a new story, new supporting characters, and all new areas to explore. For most franchises, that would be enough.

This isn’t most franchises though. This is Pokemon, a series that for many fans is more about collecting than it is exploring, characters, or narrative. As someone who has caught all of the currently available Pokemon, I’m going to need some new unsuspecting fictional creatures to abduct in order to justify the purchase of Pokemon Black/White 2. Generation 5 legendary Pokemon Kyurem does have a couple of new forms, but that’s not really a selling point when you know those forms will most likely be available in whatever main series Pokemon title hits the 3DS when the time comes.

How about you? Are you up for a new Pokemon adventure with the same old 646 ‘mons, or do you need more than that to get your Poke-heart (vol)beating fast?
