PlayStation Europe’s buy one, get one free sale isn’t as good as it looks

BOGOF? More like bog off…

You may have noticed that Sony is currently running a buy one, get one free sale on the European PlayStation Store. At first glance it looks pretty sweet, with some fairly recent releases included in the deal. Unfortunately, all is not as it seems

As commenters on the blog post announcing the deal and the folks over at Gearnuke have pointed out, some of the games included have had a significant price hike in the last few weeks.

Using PSPrices, it’s clear to see that The Last of Us Remastered, Saints Row IV: Re-Elected & Gat out of Hell and Zombie Army Trilogy have risen from their standard price of £39.99 to £44.99. Meanwhile, The Order: 1886 shot up by £10 from £34.99 to £44.99.

Raising the price of a game just before putting it on a discount is scummy and, unfortunately, all too common practice. It lets publishers advertise a bigger discount without having to drastically lower their prices, and unaware customers may assume they’re getting a better deal than they actually are.

So just keep in mind that while it may look like you’re getting a free game, depending on what you buy you may end up paying a raised price for one to cover the cost of the other.
