The best Upgrade in Pixel Blade revolves around the Spirits mechanic. You start with two Spirit slots and gain Spirits by defeating enemies which look like floating spheres around you and are showed above your HP. Each Spirit drastically increases your movement speed. That’s why Rage Spirits and Spirit Capacity is so crucial to increase your overall DPS.

  • S-Tier upgrades are the most powerful
  • A-Tier Upgrades are your best secondary options
  • B-Tier Upgrades are about specific scenarios or require you to have lots of ranks to be worth it
  • C and D-Tier upgrades are underpowered or not as useful in the core gameplay loop

Let’s dive into ranking reasons for each Upgrade separately.

S-Tier Pixel Blade Upgrades

UpgradeEffectRanking Reason

Rage Spirits
Spirits also increase your damage per Spirit in addition to movement speed. The damage increase is greater per rank.This is the best upgrade in Pixel Blade and the most important one. It drastically boosts your damage as you pick up Spirits and increase your Spirit Capacity with the upgrade below. Always take this whenever you see it, especially on Heroic.

Spirit Capacity
Increases your maximum capacity of Spirits (Starts at 2 – One slot per upgrade).Best combined with Rage Spirits. Always take these two in conjunction since they’ll give you a massive DPS boost. It’s also decent by itself since you’ll still get a lot of movement speed to dodge attacks.

Stamina
Increases your Stamina bar and also your Stamina regeneration speed. The increase is greater per rank.The best defensive upgrade in the game because of the Stamina Recovery Speed boost. This means that you’ll get much more Dodges with Q or airdashes to reposition and they’ll come back quicker. Always a great choice unless you can pick up Rage Spirits/Spirit Capacity/Flame Element.

A-Tier Pixel Blade Upgrades

UpgradeEffectRanking Reason

Flame Element
Adds Burn to your attacks (Damage increases per Rank)
Burn = 21 total damage at Rank I
7 per tick * total 3 ticks
The best damage bonus after Rage Spirits since the ticks deal the most damage out of any Element. Always take it in combination with Rage Spirits for max DPS output.

Poison Element
Adds Poison to your attacks (Damage increases per Rank)
Poison = 15.8 total damage at Rank I
7.9 per tick * total 2 ticks
Same as Flame but it deals slightly less damage overall.

Life Steal
Heals you every time you pick up a new Spirit (Spirits are dropped when you kill enemies). The healing increases per rank.A-Tier for beginners and mid-level players who are still mastering manually dodging with high movement speed from Spirits and Q i-Frames. It can be worth it to sustain HP by killing enemies between bosses if you’re getting hit. As you become better at dodging, parrying, and movement speed positioning this becomes B-Tier or lower.

B-Tier Pixel Blade Upgrades

UpgradeEffectRanking Reason

Element Circle
Gives you a close range AOE aura around you that applies a random elemental effect to enemies standing in the aura. Takes around a second to apply the first tick and the ticks each second. Damage increases with levels.
Poison = 89.8 total damage
44.9 per tick
Burn = 105.6 total damage
35.2 per tick
Freeze = 74 total damage
18.5 per tick
This is situationally really powerful or not that useful and you’re just better off taking regular Elemental upgrades. This is because it takes a second to apply the first tick of damage and you usually can’t be standing that long near enemies or you’ll get hit. Especially on Heroic or in later Chapters when you have to keep moving with lots of Spirits to avoid damage. Element Circle is incredible against the second boss though when he’s firing those shots since you can just run around him and allow the circle to keep hitting him.

Frost Element
Adds Freeze to your attacks (Damage increases per Rank)
Freeze = 10.4 total damage at Rank I
2.6 per tick * total 4 ticks
Same as Fire and Poison but Frost is in B-Tier because it’s the weakest Elemental upgrade. Still good if you get unlucky and don’t receive Fire or Poison. In those cases take Frost and it’s like A-Tier.

Critical Boost
Gives you an increasing % chance for your attacks and ticks to deal more damage.Overall a great Upgrade if you can stack it up high enough with tons of ranks. That said, this can be expensive since it means ignoring the S-Tier and A-Tier Upgrades which are much more powerful.

Recovery
Reduces the cooldown of your Weapon skill by a % percentage that increases per rank.Similar reason to Critical Boost. It’s a great Upgrade but it only works well if you max it which means giving up more powerful Talents. I would skip it but if you’re trying to have fun and just grind and test builds by all means take it.

C-Tier Pixel Blade Upgrades

UpgradeEffectRanking Reason

Health Boost
Gives you more max HP increasing with rank.You usually want to avoid attacks by stacking high Spirit which gives you tons of movement speed to dodge attacks and avoid damage. Getting hit is not worth it so stacking max HP is redundant. Great for beginners but otherwise skip it.

Agility
Gives you % chance to negate an attack increasing with ranks.Literally the same reason as Health but Agility can save you from high damage boss attacks on Heroic so it’s slightly better. I would still skip it though and get good at positioning and dodging with Q and high Spirit movement speed against bosses.

D-Tier Pixel Blade Upgrades

UpgradeEffectRanking Reason

Thorns
Deals damage to attackers that hit you. Damage increases per rank.It’s not worth it because you usually want to stack high Spirit and run around at high speeds dodging attacks. This is because you don’t want to get hit before the boss comes since you can’t regenerate HP without Life Steal. If you have Life Steal and are getting hit a lot it can be okay but I would skip.
