PAX: Might & Magic X is retro in all the right places

Party like it’s 1994!

Might & Magic X Legacy is a throwback to first-person, turn-based role-playing games. Yes, that’s a really long name for a genre but it’s what it is. The controls and gameplay are exactly the same as older Might & Magic RPGs, but it’s been given a fresh coat of modern graphics to make it look shiny and pretty.

The view of the game world is much larger than older games and, naturally, everything is rendered in 3D. The WASD keys control movement, and every time the player moves, it takes up a turn. The QE keys control turning left and right, which makes it feel exactly like an old RPG from the early ’90s since there is no mouse-look.

Some people are going to look at this and wonder what the crap is going on, while others will be rejoicing in the streets. I have some fond memories of old games like this, so I’ll be jumping into this for sure, but it’s not going to be for everyone. The playable demo at PAX was very brief, but they will be having an early beta soon so we’ll fill you in with a full preview later.
