Outlast creator teases new game with cryptic artwork

Supposedly a ‘departure’ from the usual Outlast experience

Outlast 2 is going to be a part of the PlayStation Plus offerings for November and, right on cue, Red Barrels has begun teasing its next horror game. Today, the developer shared a piece of artwork depicting two dirty arms, one of which has a dog tag with a string of numbers and the initials “MK” presumably a nod to the Murkoff Corporation alongside the tagline “Where freedom ends.”

Outlast - Where freedom ends

What does it all mean?

It’s worth jumping back to last year, when Red Barrels said its next project would be a “departure” in other words, not a direct sequel to Outlast or Outlast 2 yet still exist in the wider “Outlast universe.”

“If you’d told me a year ago that the project we’re currently working on was going to be our next thing, I would have said, ‘Nah, I don’t think so,'” Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin told GamesIndustry.biz at the time. “It’s an internal struggle. On the one side you have to stay motivated as a developer, but at the same time we have to think about stuff as company owners.” We’ll see if those plans have changed.

A proper announcement is “coming soon,” according to the studio. The teaser sure looks Outlast-y.
