Onimusha: Way of the Sword New Game Plus, Explained
Available after finishing the game for the first time, Onimusha: Way of the Sword‘s New Game Plus can be accessed by starting a new playthrough on Carnage Mode (its Hard difficulty). Once you begin, you will retain the following from your completed save. Note that this does not mean features (such as Haori Pouch switching) will be available before being unlocked during the story.
- All of your Awakened Oni Abilities.
- All upgraded basic and special abilities.
- All Hozuki Pouches and their enhancements.
- All of your Charms and their upgrades.
- Most of your items, offerings, and materials.
- All unlocked Clothing, Haori Coats, and Sword appearances (Including the Panda and Wataru-kun costumes)
- All unlocked Drills and Boss Rematch stages.
- All rescued Lion Dogs.
- All acquired Genma Notes.
As expected, all side content progression will be reset after starting a new playthrough, as will all of your Clothing, Weapon, and Gauntlet levels. Your Red Soul stock will also be lost, so make sure to spend it all before diving in. Here are a few other items/features that won’t carry over to NG+:
- The Oni Bow.
- All equipment enhancement materials.
- All unlocked Spirit Mirror fast-travel points.
Does Onimusha: Way of the Sword have difficulty settings

Unfortunately for all hoping to up the stakes while in their first playthrough, Way of the Sword‘s difficulty settings only allow you to pick your path at the start and switch between its Action and Story Modes while at any Spirit Mirror. Carnage mode is the only exception to the rule and won’t allow you to scale back after starting.
If you want to add a little more danger to your first run, however, limiting yourself to not using any type of item can make every boss a challenge, while many long-time fans recommend removing enemy health and stamina bars to get that old-school feel. On the other hand, enabling Action Prompts in Settings can be a huge help for those struggling, especially when facing larger numbers of enemies or the latter bosses in Carnage or Action.
