Oh … PS4 is region free, too!

The hits keep hittin’

While gamers were punching the air jubilantly at the almighty burn delivered directly to Microsoft’s face by Sony last night, it was easy to miss a little bit of extra triumphant information — the PlayStation 4 is region free. Add that to the list of things it does better than the Xbox One.

“And yes, PS4 is region free,” confirmed lovely boy Shuhei Yoshida on Twitter. Curt, but straight to the point.

The Xbox One’s status as a console closed to imports was all but assured when it positioned itself as a DRM delivery system, and Microsoft wasn’t shy about confirming it. Sony’s taking the exact opposite approach in almost every decision it makes — a console open to independent development, open to game ownership, and open to importers.

While Microsoft continues to restrict its audience to the rich and privileged, it appears Sony is hoping to grab everybody’s attention. I honestly hope it works, because as far as I’m concerned, Microsoft declared war not on Sony, but on the common consumer. For that, I’m all about the PS4 right now.
