Oculus on virtual reality competition: ‘We’re excited’

Oculus welcomes the ‘titans’

When we met with them yesterday morning, the people at Oculus VR were not surprised to hear my questioning on what they thought of the rumors of a potential Sony VR headset announcement at GDC. We spoke with them just hours before yesterday’s announcement of Sony’s virtual reality platform, codenamed Project Morpheus.

They said that they’re excited to see others enter the virtual reality space, as it would benefit VR developers and the community behind them.

“It validates the experience, and a lot of resources end up being shared,” Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey explained. “This is a really new thing, and it’s nice to have some titans out there telling people that this is cool.”

“But we want them to do it right,” Luckey added. “Not necessarily our way, but right.”

Oculus hopes that any other VR makers won’t rush something out the door. They admit to being not quite to the point that they want to be for a consumer release yet, saying that the newly announced development kit 2 is what they hope will bring them closer to the final retail version.

From what Sony revealed in their GDC talk, it sounds like they are taking their time to get it right. Let’s see who gets to market first!
