NIS America says it will fix Ys VIII’s localization

That even extends to updating voice-overs as needed

Responding to outcry over the disappointing Western localization of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, NIS America has acknowledged that the work is substandard and promised a solution. The publisher intends to release a patch on PlayStation 4 and Vita this November that will smooth out the game’s localization, and these changes will be incorporated into the upcoming PC version of Ys VIII at launch.

“[W]e will have a new translator and editor go over the entire localization to fix grammatical errors, typos, inconsistencies, and also to take a fresh look at the dialog and characterizations,” said NIS America president and CEO Takuro Yamashita. “For the script, where necessary, we will re-translate and re-edit the game including updating voicework to reflect these changes.”

How bad was it, exactly? This image thread has plenty of examples ranging from “Hey, that’s not how humans speak” to “Hahaha, wait, did they really name that location Archeozoic Big Hole?!”

Ys fans organized an email campaign concerning the localization and while those sorts of initiatives don’t always lead to change, in this case, Nihon and NIS America got the message loud and clear.

“We have begun internally to investigate the causes of this situation as well as to implement steps to ensure that a similar situation does not occur again,” said Yamashita.
