We need more publishers to do the same
While I’m definitely grateful for the long shelf life of recent consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360, there comes a time where having progress impeded by previous and current-generation co-development gets old. In an era where it feels like a port is announced every week, it would be nice to see more real current-gen games. Thankfully, Nippon Ichi Software is striving to do just that going forward with the PS4 and Vita.
NIS President Sohei Shinkawa recently had a chat with 4Gamer.net, and stated that “It’s precisely because nobody else is making that big jump that we think there’s value to be had in setting our sights square on PS4. Going multiplatform in such a way that previous generation hardware is retained means tuning our output relative to the capabilities of that older hardware. That’s not how progress is made and more than anything, it’s just not interesting work for us. We need to be constantly challenged.”
While I wouldn’t want to see everyone drop the previous generation entirely right this minute, it’s a nice sentiment to see a developer wanting to move forward rather than squeeze water from a stone.
