Nintendo Switch 2 surpasses 2 million unit sales in the US, destroying pace of the original system

Not a huge surprise.

The July 2025 video game industry highlights are in, and analysts are combing through the details to discover how the market is trending currently, and it is a big win for the Nintendo Switch 2.

As reported by Mat Piscatella, the Nintendo Switch 2 has now sold over 2 million units in the U.S. market alone. This also represents a 75-percent spike ahead of Switch 1 U.S. sales during the same release period, making the Nintendo Switch 2 on course to break all sorts of records if the trends continue.

Hardware – Nintendo Switch 2 has now surpassed 2 million units sold in the US life-to-date. It is currently 75% ahead of the unit sales pace set by the original Nintendo Switch.

Switch 2 is also the best-selling video game hardware in units and dollars for both July and the 2025 year-to-date, despite only being out for a few months. July dollar sales of PS5 hardware declined 47 percent compared to the same period last year, while Xbox Series X sales dropped 69 percent during the same period. Unsurprisingly, the original Nintendo Switch has also seen a 52 percent year-on-year decline in spending, with the Switch 2 offering backwards compatibility.

The Nintendo Switch 2, however, has received a lot of help, albeit with factors beyond Nintendo’s control. Both Xbox and Sony have raised the prices of their consoles due to “challenging economic environments” in recent weeks, leaving the Switch 2 placed as the most affordable console on the market. Nintendo’s exclusive games appeal is unmatched in history, as it is the only place you can play games like Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon.

Donkey Kong Bananza also achieved substantial sales numbers in the U.S. market in July, coming in third among the best-selling games, behind EA Sports College Football 26, which took the number one and two slots. There’s no sign of Mario Kart World this month, though, in the top 20.

With this, it is looking likely that the Nintendo Switch 2 will surpass 10 million console sales worldwide by the end of the year, with a massive offering of exclusive titles still to come, including Pokémon Legends Z-A (Oct. 16), Kirby Air Riders (Nov. 20), and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, among other standout must-have titles.
